Detection/Self Exams
A monthly self-examination is extremely important to become familiar with the pattern of moles, freckles and blemishes on your own skin so that you can easily detect new growths or other changes.
- Pay specific attention to the size, shape, edges, and color of each mole (remember the A-B-C-D-E's).
- Include hard-to-see areas such as the mouth, scalp, ears, back of shoulders, lower back, buttocks and back of thighs.
- Perform the examination in a well-lit room and in front of a full-length mirror.
- Use a hand-held mirror or the assistance of a family member or friend for hard-to-see areas.
In conjunction with a self-exam, get screened for melanoma by a medical professional.
