SKIN IN THE GAME / Frederick Kids Triathlon

Saturday, May 25, 2013 7:30 a.m.
Frederick High School,
650 Carroll Parkway,
Frederick, MD 21701

Overview
This TRI TO “WIN-THE-FIGHT” event, renamed this year to the “Frederick Kids Kathryn Rushford Memorial Triathlon,” is held annually on Memorial Day weekend to honor an amazing woman who recently lost her battle with melanoma on March 13, 2013. Open for children between the ages of 6 to 13, the triathlon offers a safe, non-competitive triathlon experience for children, and more importantly, provides important lessons on staying “safe” in the sun. The race features a pool swim, residential bike course and park path run. And, the addition of timing chips, provides an accurate and “real” timed-race experience!

Though a charity fundraising event to benefit the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation, the race was begun by race director Martha Rushford to honor and spotlight her mother’s battle and the importance of “sun safe” practices and preventative measures to avoid skin cancer. The passing of Kathy Rushford, most coincidentally, occurred on the exact 10th year anniversary date of Joanna M. Nicolay’s death on March 13, 2003. The event honors another amazing woman, who unfortunately can no longer attend in-person, as she’s done in the past, but Kathy would want the work to educate about melanoma and to raise funds for valuable research, to continue. Her goal, and same for all of us – less melanoma!
