Prevention / JMNMF Awareness Programs
The Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation participates in awareness activities to spread the message about Sun-Safety:
Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk
Held in May, Melanoma Month, of each year, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk is a perfect opportunity to remind the public about the importance of wearing sunscreen. The Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation hands out free samples of sunscreen and reminds walkers about the dangers of the sun and the importance of protecting themselves to reduce their risk of getting melanoma.
The Maryland Seafood Festival
The Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation booth at the main entrance to the Maryland Seafood Festival is a hub of activity to provide festival goers the opportunity for free sunscreen, educational material and a chance to win a free sun shade structure. The event is held annually in September at Sandy Point State Park.
TRI-TO-WIN Triathlon
Through the TRI-TO-WIN triathlon series, the Foundation raises awareness about melanoma through an international platform of participation. The events reach thousands of participants and spectators. Triathlons, comprised of swim, bike and run events, are perfect initiatives to communicate the melanoma prevention and detection message to athletes who train and race countless days in the sun.
Mothers and Others Against Skin Cancer (MASC) Program
The Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation joined Kendel S. Ehrlich, former First Lady of Maryland and Susan Allen, former First Lady of Virginia in Annapolis, Maryland with Mothers and Others Against Skin Cancer (MASC) to encourage their states' residents to educate themselves about the importance of sun safety and skin cancer prevention. Denise Safko from the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation presented a personal story of her mother's battle through melanoma.
Health Fairs, Hospitals, Health Departments, Schools, Sporting Events and Businesses
Each year the Foundation increases the time it spends speaking and participating in events to spread awareness about melanoma awareness and Sun-Safety. The Foundation's outreach to Hospitals and Health Departments throughout the state of Maryland each May to offer free educational materials is a program that will continue to expand.
