Prevention / More Information for Kids

Teach your children good sun protection habits at an early age. The damage that leads to adult skin cancers starts in childhood.

Melanoma in children is uncommon but is on the rise. The National Cancer Institute estimates that it is increasing at a rate of 1.3% per year.

Since doctors do not look for this, it is important to watch for changes in the skin of children too.

The Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation is committed to working with children to promote the awareness of our most precious assets, our children.

Working with The Maryland Skin Cancer Prevention Program, Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation has co-sponsored the annual sun-safe poster contest since 2004.

Some excellent programs designed for children include:

  • The Maryland Skin Cancer Prevention Program
  • SunGuard Man
  • The National Safety Council
  • The Environmental Protection Agency SunWise Kids Program
