JOANNA M. NICOLAY MELANOMA FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES
MEALS ON WHEELS AS NEW BENEFICIARY FOR 2014 SPRINT TRIATHLON
The Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation (JMNMF) has announced that Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland (MOWCM) will be the new beneficiary and event organizer for the 12th Annual South Carroll Sprint Triathlon scheduled for June 15, 2014.
The event, hosted by the South Carroll Swim Club, annually attracts athletes from over a dozen Maryland counties and half-dozen states and is an excellent event for first-timers and experienced racers to compete in a family friendly, enthusiastic and well-supported event. The 400-meter swim features a great outdoor competition pool, and the 14-mile bike and 5K run showcase the scenic and rolling countryside of southern Carroll County, Maryland.
This year, race participants will be encouraged to raise funds so that no senior goes hungry.
The JMNMF founded in 2004 from the touching memories of an exceptional woman and her challenging battle with melanoma skin cancer is proud of a decade of accomplishments in melanoma education, advocacy and research. The Foundation established national visibility through underwriting research at prestigious cancer centers across the U.S.; launching a comprehensive high school skin cancer health curriculum; increasing national awareness of melanoma prevention; and, providing a broad spectrum of care and advocacy resources for patients and the entire melanoma community. While the Foundation will continue to fund and administer its nationally-renowned Research Scholar Awards program, educational curriculum, and patient advocacy initiatives through the end of 2014, at years end, it will conclude its legacy.
Our Foundations accomplishments have been invaluable at both the national and grassroots levels, stated Regina Bodnar, JMNMF Chair. Im pleased to have served and witnessed the JMNMF become a renowned national charity and achieve numerous mission-specific goals. And, while we will continue several important programs and services through 2014, were exceptionally pleased to transition the South Carroll Sprint Triathlon to Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland and a fellow Foundation Board member who works on the MOWCM team.
As a melanoma survivor, I have participated in this event for the past 5 years and I know how much support is needed and received from the community to make it work, said Debbie Brown, Director, Marketing & Communications, Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland. Putting together events is what our team does, so what a great opportunity for Meals on Wheels to expand its message and, more importantly, keep the wheels spinning on such a great event, she added. The South Carroll Swim Club, which has hosted the sprint triathlon event since its inception, is also very excited to continue its support of the event as it transitions to a new beneficiary.
The swim club, swim team and the parents have enjoyed volunteering at the event in support of JMNMF and we look forward to providing the same support and energy to Meals on Wheels, said Ms. Tally Johnstone, President, South Carroll Swim Club. We are so happy that the race will continue and that our members as well as participating athletes will have a chance to help raise awareness about senior hunger.
